A Dive of Reflection: The History of the Salem Express

A Maritime Grave (Hyndman Reef, Safaga)

The MV Salem Express was a ferry that tragically sank on December 15, 1991, after striking the Hyndman Reef near Safaga. The majority of passengers were Egyptian pilgrims returning from Mecca.

The ship went down in less than 20 minutes, resulting in one of the Red Sea’s greatest tragedies. The wreck is officially considered a maritime grave.

Out of profound respect for the lives lost, penetration into the interior of the main passenger compartments is strictly forbidden. We honor this sacred site by maintaining a respectful, exterior-only exploration.

Program Details: Wreck & Reef Day Trip

Dive Site: The Salem Express, Safaga (Day Trip).
Transfer Coverage: Transfers from any hotel in Hurghada or Marsa Alam are arranged (Transfer fees may apply depending on location, inquire upon booking).
Max Depth: 30 meters (98 feet) – Requires Advanced Open Water (AOWD) or equivalent.
Dives: Two Dives included (1x Wreck, 1x Vibrant Coral Reef nearby).
The Wreck Dive: A respectful tour of the massive 110-meter ferry, resting on its starboard side.
Included: Lunch and soft drinks served on the boat.
