Discover One of the Most Famous Dive Sites in the Red Sea
Elphinstone Reef is one of the most iconic reef dives in Egypt and a site that appears on the wish list of advanced divers from around the world. Current sources consistently describe it as a long narrow offshore reef near Marsa Alam, usually around 300 to 500 metres in length, with steep walls dropping to over 100 metres on each side. Some sources describe it as about 375 metres long, while others place it closer to 500 metres, but all agree on the core character: Elphinstone is a dramatic offshore reef with plateaus at both the north and south ends and serious blue-water exposure.
What makes the site so famous is not only the reef structure itself, but the way current and location combine to attract larger marine life. Current sources regularly highlight the north and south plateaus as the key places where divers may see species such as oceanic whitetip sharks, hammerheads, barracudas, turtles, and large schools of pelagic fish. The reef top lies very shallow, often between one and three metres, while the walls and plateaus quickly open into much deeper water, giving the whole dive a very exposed and exciting feeling.
Many guests staying at Desert Rose Hotel and nearby resort areas choose Elphinstone Reef as part of a broader diving holiday connected to Hurghada. It fits beautifully into a programme that can also include Dolphin House, Salem Express, and an enjoyable Night Dive. That kind of combination allows divers to mix calm marine encounters, wreck history, after-dark reef life, and one of the most serious advanced reef dives in the Red Sea.
What Makes Elphinstone Reef So Special
Dramatic Walls and Plateaus
Elphinstone is famous for steep wall diving on both sides of the reef and for the north and south plateaus that create its most iconic dive routes.
Shark and Pelagic Potential
The reef is globally known for the chance to encounter oceanic whitetips, hammerheads, barracudas, jacks, and other large blue-water species.
True Advanced Red Sea Diving
Strong current, offshore position, and blue-water exposure make Elphinstone one of the most exciting and respected advanced dive sites in Egypt.
A Dive with Scale, Current, and Real Blue-Water Energy
One of the biggest reasons divers remember Elphinstone Reef is that it feels powerful from the moment the dive begins. The reef rises out of deep water, the walls fall away dramatically, and the plateaus create zones where anything can appear from the blue. This is exactly the kind of site that gives advanced Red Sea diving its reputation. It is beautiful, but it is not gentle. It demands awareness, good buoyancy, and real comfort in current and open-water conditions.
The reef is also incredibly rich visually. Current sources mention soft coral growth, anthias, fusiliers, trevallies, turtles, and strong coral coverage across the walls and plateaus. This means Elphinstone is not only about sharks. It is also an outstanding reef in its own right, full of colour and life even on dives when large pelagics do not appear. For divers planning a memorable Scuba Diving holiday near Hurghada, Elphinstone Reef delivers the full Red Sea combination of beauty, scale, and adrenaline.
