Dive Site Overview

Located roughly 30 kilometers north of Marsa Alam, Elphinstone Reef is a legendary cigar-shaped finger reef reaching out from the deep blue open ocean. Famed worldwide for its breathtaking sheer vertical drop-offs, vibrant soft coral walls, and unpredictable, high-octane currents, it stands as a premier destination for elite scuba divers looking to witness the Red Sea's raw power.

The Underwater Topography

The reef runs almost exactly north to south, featuring two spectacular deep plateaus dynamic enough to satisfy the most demanding technical and recreational drift profiles:

• The North Plateau: Slopes gradually down to about 25 meters before plunging into a second terrace at 40 meters. This area serves as a primary cleaning station where early morning drift hunters can look directly into the current for approaching pelagic action.
• The South Plateau: Starts around 25 meters and drops steeply into the abyss. It features a famous underwater limestone archway/tunnel at 50-60 meters, which is strictly a destination reserved for qualified technical trimix divers.

What You Will Encounter (Shark Diving & Pelagics)

Elphinstone is a rich marine ecosystem where nutrient-dense currents fuel a magnificent food chain. The vertical reef faces are entirely carpeted in purple, orange, and pink soft corals (Dendronephthya), surrounded by huge swarms of anthias.

The Main Attractions Include:

• Shark Profiles: Renowned for close-up encounters with Oceanic Whitetip Sharks (Carcharhinus longimanus) cruising just below the surface, as well as Hammerheads, Grey Reef Sharks, and occasional Silky Sharks.
• Pelagic Giants: Massive barracuda schools, giant trevally, hunting tunas, and elegant manta rays passing along the drop-offs.
• Reef Residents: Giant moray eels, hawksbill turtles feeding on soft sponges, and Napoleon wrasses checking out passing divers.
