Salem Express

The Salem Express Wreck is one of the most well-known and emotionally powerful wreck dives in the Red Sea. For divers visiting Hurghada, it offers a very different kind of Scuba Diving experience, one defined not only by the size and shape of the wreck but also by the deep human story connected to it. Lying off Safaga at Hyndman Reef, the Salem Express is a large roll-on, roll-off passenger ferry that sank in December 1991 and today rests on its starboard side in recreational diving depths. At Red Sea Life Diving Center, we organise guided trips to this site for experienced certified divers who want to visit it with professionalism, awareness, and respect.

Discover One of the Most Significant Wreck Dives in the Red Sea

The Salem Express Wreck is very different from most other wreck dives in the Red Sea. While many wrecks are explored mainly for adventure, structure, and marine life, Salem Express carries a much heavier historical and emotional weight. The ferry struck Hyndman Reef while approaching Safaga and sank in December 1991, with a major loss of life. Because of that history, many divers regard the site as a place that should be visited with maturity, sensitivity, and real respect.

Today, the wreck lies on its starboard side and is commonly described as extending from around 12 metres down to about 30 to 32 metres on the seabed. Its large size, preserved structure, and the fact that many personal items reportedly remained visible for years have made it one of the most talked-about wreck dives in the region. At the same time, the site remains controversial within the diving community, and that is exactly why it should never be treated like an ordinary wreck.

Many guests staying at Desert Rose Hotel and nearby resort areas choose Salem Express as part of a wider diving holiday in Hurghada when they want to include one of the Red Sea’s most famous wrecks. It can be combined with Dolphin House, Elphinstone Reef, and a carefully chosen Night Dive to create a fuller programme that includes reef beauty, offshore challenge, marine encounters, and important wreck history.

What Makes the Salem Express Wreck So Special

Historic Significance

Salem Express is one of the most historically significant wrecks in the Red Sea, and that history shapes the whole atmosphere of the dive.

Large Preserved Structure

The ferry’s size and its starboard-side resting position create a powerful visual presence underwater from shallow sections down to the seabed.

Respectful Wreck Diving

This is a site where responsible diving matters deeply, and many divers value the experience precisely because of the respect it demands.

A Wreck Dive That Feels Powerful and Unforgettable

One of the reasons the Salem Express Wreck leaves such a lasting impression is the scale of the ferry itself. At over 100 metres in length, it remains a huge underwater structure, and even from outside the wreck the sense of size is immediate. Divers often describe the wreck as both visually impressive and emotionally sobering. It is not only the wreck’s physical profile that matters, but also the knowledge of what happened here.

The wreck can offer fascinating exterior exploration, with lifeboats, railings, windows, and preserved sections of the ferry still visible. Some sources note that entry points exist and that divers have entered the ship, while other voices in the diving community strongly emphasise limits, respect, and the need for sensitive behaviour because of the tragic nature of the site. That tension is part of why Salem Express is remembered so strongly. It is both a remarkable wreck and a place that asks divers to think carefully about how they dive it.

Combine Salem Express with Other Famous Hurghada Experiences

One of the strongest advantages of diving from Hurghada is the variety of experiences available during one holiday. The Salem Express Wreck works well in a broader itinerary because it adds major historical significance and large-wreck exploration to a programme that may also include marine-life-focused trips and offshore reef diving. Guests often combine it with Dolphin House for a softer and more relaxed day, or with Elphinstone Reef when they also want a stronger offshore challenge.

A carefully chosen Night Dive adds another layer to the holiday, offering a completely different perspective on Red Sea marine life. When these experiences are combined properly, the whole trip becomes much richer. You enjoy calm reefs, marine encounters, advanced diving, major wreck history, and after-dark exploration, all from one base.

With Red Sea Life Diving Center, we can help organise this kind of programme in a smooth and practical way. Whether you want a balanced itinerary or a more adventurous one, we tailor the experience to your certification level, your interests, and your holiday dates.
